Weekly POPcast #33, a Labrador Records special

Posted in Podcast with tags , , , , , , , , , on 13/01/2011 by Outerbeat

Both from Sweden

To most of us over here, Sweden means IKEA furniture, Jönköping matches, and quality pop music. We were talking about the last on tonight’s Outerbeat.

We went all woof as the show was dedicated to Labrador Records, “Sweden’s and the world’s finest purveyor of pop music” in their own words. Founded in 1997 by Bengt Rahm and merged with Johan Angergård’s Summersound Records a couple of years later, the label has been tirelessly sniffing out good Swedish music and bring it in to us all over the globe.

In homage to the label, we chose 10 Labrador artists and played a song from each artist (trust me, it was hard to pick just ten). We even had requests sent in hours before the show started. We played both old and new artists, ranging from Tribeca‘s synth-tinged pop to Pelle Carlberg‘s amusing parody of… you know who (or you will, when you listen to the podcast). Oh, and Acid House Kings and Club 8 as well, naturally. 😉

Weekly POPcast #32, New Year’s Giveaway and Heartbreaks Abound

Allo Darlin'

What better way to start a brand new year than with a number of good pop songs (and two “heartbreak” songs in a row)? In this episode we had Allo Darlin’ pleading to spend New Year with them, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (“Heart In Your Heartbreak”) and Brilliant at Breakfast (“Nobody Ever Died of a Broken Heart [but I Don’t Want To Be the First]”). To celebrate the new year, we also gave away a copy of Brilliant at Breakfast’s debut full album, which is to be launched on the 11th,to a lucky listener!

We also had Frente, Horowitz, Asobi Seksu, Wild Nothing, Oláfachada, and an emerging ukulele duo from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Answer Sheet. Closing the show on a lighter note was This Many Boyfriends with their amusing song “I Don’t Like You (‘Cos You Don’t Like The Pastels)”. Also requests of Club 8, The Drums and Acid House Kings.

Happy New Year.. and enjoy!

Weekly POPcast #30, a Bubblegum Lemonade special!

Bubblegum Lemonade

Caroline lives for the radio / Caroline lives for the midnight show
Lying in her bed, a sister to her head / Oh Caroline knows…

This was a very special show because Matinee Recording‘s Glasgow-based one-man act Bubblegum Lemonade has kindly recorded the acoustic version of three of his songs exclusively for Outerbeat! Not only that, but Laz — the fellow behind Bubblegum Lemonade — also picked some of his favourite tracks with female vocals (Astrud Gilberto, Club 8, Po, The Cardigans, The Gentle Waves and Annemarie) and one with male vocals (The Sea Urchins) for tonight’s playlist.

All of which were, in the band’s own Orwellian speech, Doubleplusgood. 😉

Hence, definitely a mixtape-worthy show. Instead of the usual podcast, you can download a mixtape containing the songs played in tonight’s show.

Bubblegum Lemonade’s Outerbeat session track listing:

  1. Caroline’s Radio
  2. Cuts Like A Dream
  3. Maybe Someday
  4. You’re Still Beautiful (When You’re Sad)
